About the sculptor

Mike Munyaradzi was born on the 1st February 1967 at the Tengenge sculpture village in Guruve.  His famous father the late Henry Munyaradzi inspired his son to sculpt and make the most of every opportunity. As a young boy Mike remembers preferring to spend time in the company of his father and work on the same pieces Henry would be working on. Henry would encourage his son’s efforts. In 1980 Mike began to sculpt seriously under his fathers guidance.

Henry’s success and fame as a sculptor afforded Mike the best opportunities for education. Mike has continued sculpting and vows to follow in his father’s footsteps. “The way I sculpt is a combined effort between the stone and myself. The stone presents to me a natural sculpture, which I must expose into a form understood by everyone. I learnt from Henry that every natural shape of a stone is a sculpture in waiting - don’t fight with the stone, work together with it and a beautiful sculpture comes out smoothly from the rock”

His work forms part of collections at Stone Heritage, La Pierre Galleries, Chapungu Sculpture Park in Harare, Sango Art Gallery in Belgium, Gallery Sonda, World Art foundation in the Netherlands, The Hemmingway African Gallery in New York and Handelsman Sculpture Park in Chicago.
