Both his parents are alive; his father was a driver but is now retired.Gregory is one of a family of five and is the eldest son. His totem is the Buffalo. He is not married.
He went to St Lukes Primary School and then proceeded onto secondary school at Faiths Mission for three years from 1975 - 1977 where he studied art and left after passing standard VI.
He then went onto the Job Kekana Art and Craft school in Rusape, where he was taught art and carving using Soapstone and wood. This influenced and determined his future career.
After three years - in 1977 - Gregory was awarded a Diploma in Fine Art and on obtaining his Diploma he got a job in Chiredzi in the Low Veld of Zimbabwe as a furniture designer. He was not happy however at just designing, preferring to create his own art.
Gregory applied and got a job in Harare at African Art Promotions in 1979 as a carver and began carving in Verdite and Ivory. He specialises in carving heads and traditional figures. He prefers the detailed and pure art form.
He lives in lodgings, but would like to purchase his own home one-day. He has managed to purchase a car through his earnings.
Gregory Mutasa’s ambition is to make a name as a sculptor and to travel abroad as he has never been outside of Zimbabwe.
